Hello students!

We have gathered a list of national and regional societies that many of our faculty and current students are members of. National professional mathematics and STEM societies focus on different missions – dissemination of mathematical research, mathematics education, applied/industrial mathematics, and fostering success for historically underrepresented groups in math and science. They are a great way to network with professional mathematicians and peers. Most of these societies hold conferences or meetings throughout the year where you can learn of current research in areas of interest to you, participate in professional development workshops, and learn about opportunities in industry, government, and academia.

American Mathematical Society

The AMS is an association of professional mathematicians dedicated to “further the interests of mathematical research, scholarship and education, serving the national and international community through publications, meetings, advocacy and other programs.”

The AMS, along with the MAA, SIAM, AWM, and other organizations, holds the largest annual research mathematics meeting in the world, the Joint Mathematics Meeting (JMM) held yearly in early January.

See the AMS for Students page. You will find information about REUs, internships, scholarships and awards, graduate school, and careers for mathematicians.

Mathematical Association of America

The MAA is a professional society that “focuses on mathematics accessible at the undergraduate level”. This is a great society to become involved with if you are interested in high school math education.

The MAA sponsors the annual summer MathFest and cosponsors the annual JMM. Regional sections also hold regular meetings. Visit Southern California-Nevada MAA Section for our regional MAA section. CI students often present their research at the regional conferences. Make sure to look out for emails inviting you to attend in the fall and spring!

Society of Industrial & Applied Mathematics

The focus for the society is applied, computational and industrial mathematics. SIAM often promotes its acronym as “Science and Industry Advance with Mathematics.” Their mission is “to build cooperation between mathematics and the worlds of science and technology through our publications, research, and community.” Members include engineers, scientists, industrial mathematicians, and academic mathematicians.

The society includes a number of activity groups (SIAGs) with more focus on a particular branch of applied mathematics, e.g. Life Sciences, Mathematics of Planet Earth, Imaging Science, etc.

SIAM organizes an annual conference each summer. See their website for the meetings sponsored by the different SIAGs.

Association for Women in Mathematics

The AWM’s mission is to “encourage women and girls to study and to have active careers in the mathematical sciences, and to promote equal opportunity and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences.” It offers numerous programs and workshops to mentor women and girls in the mathematical sciences.

The AWM holds Research Conferences every two years and holds events during the three major annual conferences – the annual JMM, the annual MathFest, the annual SIAM Meeting. In particular, the AWM sponsors three honorary lecture series

  • Noether Lectures - given at JMM
  • Falconer Lectures – given at MathFest
  • Kovalevsky Lectures – given at SIAM Annual Meeting

Make sure to check their website for scholarships, awards, and grants.

California Mathematics Council

One of the CMC’s commitments is to promote “professional activities that will ensure continual improvement towards excellence in the teaching of mathematics.”

Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science

SACNAS is an inclusive national organization promoting success and leadership in STEM, particularly for those from historically underrepresented groups. SACNAS holds its annual national conference in October.
