The Masters Thesis or Mast= ers Project represents the culmination of your study for a degree of Masters of Science in Mathematics. The t= hesis/ project requirement provides you the opportunity to undertake a significant self-learning experience under the guidance of a faculty advisor. The advisor guides you throug= hout your research, advises you on writing, and consults with you to determine w= hen you are ready for the defence. There are two parts to a thesis/ proje= ct: the written component and the oral component, the latter consisting of a public oral presentation of your work= and an oral defence of your work before your committee. The process of carrying out the wo= rk for your thesis/ project and of writing and presenting your work will give you a taste of the life of a professional mathematician.

Upon completion of the Mas= ters Thesis Requirement, the student will be able to:

3.&n= bsp; discuss his/her results both formally and informally

4.&n= bsp; demonstrate know= ledge of current issues in the chosen field

5.&n= bsp; prepare and cond= uct presentations on current issues in mathematical sciences<= /p>

1.&n= bsp; design an indepe= ndent solution to an industrial or scientific project

2.&n= bsp; write report on = the project

3.&n= bsp; discuss his/her results both formally and informally

4.&n= bsp; demonstrate know= ledge of current issues in the related field

5.&n= bsp; prepare and cond= uct presentations on current issues in mathematical sciences

Students are responsible for fulfilling the following requirements.=

· = Select an advisor who agrees to work with the student. The thesis/ project advisor and the student will jointly find anot= her faculty member or community expert who agrees to form the thesis/ project committee[1].

· = Submit a thesis/ project proposal that meets= committee approval. The thesis/ project proposal must include the scope of the thesis/ project as well as specific = work products required, with some detail given as to what will constitute these = work products.

· = Meet regularly with the faculty advisor, and make consistent progress on the thesis/ project.

· = Thoroughly review the scientific literature germane to the research project.

· = Keep a notebook recording the student's prog= ress on the research.

· = Make an oral presentation of the thesis/ pro= ject and pass an oral defense of the thesis/ project. (Poster presentations of the thesi= s/ project material are strongly encouraged but not required. One excellent ve= nue is the annual Student Poster Session at the Spring MAA Meeting.)

· = Submit draft and final versions of the thesi= s/ project. The final version mu= st conform to published content and formatting guidelines.
