Can I take the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) exam at CI now?

The math program does not the administer ELM exam , for more info visit the ETS website

I think I already know the material for this course. May I test out?

No. Please register in the appropriate class.

What if I do not pass Math 94 or Math 95?

If you do not pass Math 94 your first semester, you can retake it during your second semester. If you pass it during your second semester, you can take Math 95 or its equivalent during the summer at ANOTHER school or college or university. (CI does not currently offer summer classes.) If you do not pass Math 94 both semesters, you will need to take Math 94 AND Math 95 (or their equivalents) over the summer.

If you do not pass Math 95 your first semester, take it again your second semester.

By the beginning of your third semester you must complete both classes in order to continue in the CSU system.

What if I just took the ELM and am waiting for my scores?

If you are currently registered in Math 94/95 and awaiting your ELM scores we advise to remain in that class and do the homework assignments in case you did not perform well on your ELM exam. Here is what you will do according to your ELM score:

  • If you are taking ELM stay enrolled in Math 94.
  • If you get 50 or more you are done with ELM, drop your Math 94/95.
  • If you get between 35 and 49 then you can drop Math 94 but register in Math 95.
    • If this is your first semester, wait and enroll in Math 95 next semester.
    • If this is your second semester at CI (doubtful, since you should have done this at the beginning of your first semester) then enroll this semester in Math 95 ASAP.
  • If you score 34 or less stay registered in Math 94 AND pass it AND next semester you will enroll in Math 95.

Note: Do NOT drop anything until you know your ELM score.

If I have not met the ELM requirement but I think I know enough math… may I just skip Math 94 or Math 95 and take a more advanced math class?

No, you can not. If you do not meet the requirement during your first year, you can be expelled from the university.

What should I do before the summer if I need to take the equivalent of Math 95 somewhere?

Contact the Registrar office to fill out the Math Remedial Form and bring the info about where you will take the class and which class that will be.
